One dog sleeps peacefully through thunderstorms but disappears upstairs when the vacuum cleaner comes out. Another barely notices the vacuum yet starts shaking when a smoke alarm chirps. And some dogs who seemed completely unfazed by noise as puppies become frightened by particular sounds later in life.
So why are dogs afraid of certain sounds but not others?
The answer is more complicated than simply having sensitive hearing. A dog's response to sound is shaped by the characteristics of the noise, their genetics, early experiences, previous frightening events, physical health, and how their brain has learned to interpret that particular sound.
Noise sensitivity is also remarkably common. In a large study of more than 13,000 pet dogs, 32% showed marked fear of at least one type of noise, making noise sensitivity the most common anxiety-related trait studied.
As a veterinarian, one of the most important things I want owners to understand is that a frightened dog isn't being dramatic or difficult. Their brain has decided the sound represents danger. Helping them means working with that emotional response, rather than simply trying to stop the behavior it produces.
Dogs can become frightened of sounds because of genetics, early experiences, learning, pain, or a combination of these factors.
Sudden, unpredictable, high-pitched, or extremely loud sounds are particularly likely to trigger fear.
Dogs hear a wider range of frequencies than humans, so some noises may be more noticeable or intense to them.
A single frightening experience can sometimes create a lasting association with a particular sound.
Repeated exposure does not necessarily mean a dog will simply "get used to" a frightening noise.
Noise fears can generalize, meaning a dog may begin reacting to related sounds, places, weather conditions, or situations.
New noise sensitivity in an adult or older dog deserves veterinary attention because pain or other medical changes may contribute.
Early recognition and careful behavior modification usually give us a better chance of preventing mild sound sensitivity from becoming severe.

It helps to start with the obvious anatomical difference: dogs do not hear the world exactly as humans do.
Dogs can hear higher-frequency sounds than we can, and their mobile ears are extremely good at detecting and locating sound. That means a noise you barely notice may be much more obvious to your dog.
But hearing ability alone doesn't explain noise fear.
If it did, virtually every dog would be terrified of the same noises. Instead, one dog might panic at fireworks while another sleeps through them. Some dogs react intensely to the tiny electronic beep from a smoke detector yet happily tolerate much louder traffic noise.
The brain therefore matters just as much as the ears.
A useful way to think about it is that the ears detect the sound, while the brain decides what that sound means.
If the brain categorizes it as harmless, very little happens. If it categorizes the sound as a possible threat, the body's stress response begins.
Several characteristics can make a sound particularly difficult for dogs.
An unexpected bang gives the nervous system very little time to assess what is happening.
Fireworks, gunshots, objects crashing to the floor, construction noises, and thunder can all produce this sudden startle response.
That reflex is useful from an evolutionary perspective. If something explodes behind you, immediately preparing to escape is safer than calmly investigating its acoustic properties first.
For some dogs, however, the response becomes disproportionately strong or persists long after the sound has stopped.
Predictability gives the brain information.
A washing machine may produce a relatively constant hum that a dog gradually learns to ignore. Fireworks are very different. There may be silence, followed by an enormous bang, another period of silence, several rapid explosions, then another unpredictable pause.
The dog cannot determine when the next frightening event will happen.
That uncertainty can keep the nervous system on alert even between individual noises.
Thunderstorms are especially complicated because the sound may be combined with flashes of light, wind, rain, changes in atmospheric pressure, and other environmental cues. Eventually, some dogs begin reacting before the thunder itself arrives.
Not every problematic sound needs to be loud.
Research examining dogs' reactions to ordinary household noises found particularly strong fear responses to high-frequency, intermittent sounds, including smoke detector battery warnings. Dogs exposed to household noises displayed signs including trembling, hiding, retreating, panting, and changes in ear and body position.
This is worth remembering when your dog appears frightened "for no reason."
Their trigger might be an electronic beep or high-pitched mechanical noise that barely registers with you.
Some dogs appear to arrive in the world with a nervous system more vulnerable to fear than others.
That doesn't mean there is a single "noise phobia gene." Behavior is much more complicated than that.
Research has nevertheless found significant breed differences in noise sensitivity, and genomic studies have identified regions associated with fear and sensitivity to loud sounds. One study in German Shepherd Dogs, for example, identified a genomic region associated specifically with noise sensitivity.
Large population studies have also found considerable differences between breeds in their likelihood of showing fear of thunder or fireworks.
Genetics are therefore best thought of as altering the starting conditions rather than determining an inevitable outcome.
Two puppies might encounter exactly the same thunderstorm. One quickly recovers and goes back to sleep. The other remains alert for hours and becomes increasingly worried during subsequent storms.
Their experiences are similar, but their brains may process those experiences differently.
Puppyhood is an important period for learning which parts of the world are safe and ordinary.
Ideally, puppies encounter a broad range of everyday sights, surfaces, people, places, and sounds at an intensity they can comfortably handle.
The important phrase there is comfortably handle.
Socialization does not mean overwhelming a puppy with every possible stimulus. Playing extremely loud recordings while a frightened puppy has nowhere to escape may achieve the opposite of what you intended.
Research involving thousands of dogs has found an association between lower levels of puppy socialization and greater non-social fearfulness later in life, including noise sensitivity.
Good early exposure should therefore be gradual and positive.
A puppy quietly noticing traffic from a comfortable distance while eating treats is learning something very different from a puppy being dragged beside a busy road while desperately trying to escape.
Sometimes the origin of a noise fear is fairly obvious.
A firework explodes unexpectedly beside a dog during a walk. The dog panics and bolts toward home. From that point onward, bangs become frightening.
This is classical conditioning: the brain forms an association between a previously neutral stimulus and something unpleasant or frightening.
It doesn't always take dozens of repetitions.
When an event is sufficiently intense, one experience can produce a very strong memory.
I have seen dogs in practice whose owners could pinpoint the beginning of their sound fear almost to the day: a nearby firework display, construction accident, car backfire, or alarm suddenly transformed a previously confident dog.
Other cases are much less clear. There may not be one identifiable event at all. Genetics, temperament, repeated mild experiences, and environmental factors can gradually combine until the reaction becomes noticeable.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding canine fear.
Repeated exposure can produce habituation, where the brain learns that an irrelevant stimulus can safely be ignored.
But that only happens under the right circumstances.
If every exposure frightens the dog, something very different can happen: sensitization. Instead of reacting less strongly over time, the nervous system becomes increasingly responsive.
Interestingly, a 2024 study investigating the everyday sound environments of dogs found no relationship between how frequently dogs encountered different sounds and whether those sounds produced negative emotional responses. In other words, frequent exposure alone did not guarantee that dogs became comfortable with a noise.
This is why "they'll get used to it" is risky advice for a genuinely frightened dog.
If your dog spends every fireworks season terrified for several hours at a time, simply experiencing more fireworks is unlikely to teach them that fireworks are harmless.
Carefully controlled exposure at an intensity that does not produce fear is very different.
Once a significant fear has developed, the brain can begin making broader associations.
Imagine that fireworks repeatedly occur after dark.
Initially, the dog fears the explosions themselves. Later they become nervous when they hear a distant pop. Eventually they may become restless when darkness falls because darkness predicts the possibility of fireworks.
This process is called generalization.
A thunder-sensitive dog might begin reacting to heavy rain, dark clouds, wind, or changes associated with an approaching storm.
A dog frightened by construction equipment may subsequently react to trucks, metallic banging, or even the street where the original noise occurred.
This explains why noise fears sometimes appear to "spread."
The dog isn't inventing new things to worry about. Their brain is becoming increasingly good at identifying anything that might predict the frightening event.
This is especially important when an adult or older dog suddenly becomes frightened of noises that never bothered them before.
Research from veterinary behavior cases has identified an association between musculoskeletal pain and later-onset noise sensitivity. Dogs in the pain-associated group tended to develop noise problems at an older age and showed greater generalization of their fears.
One proposed explanation involves the startle response.
Imagine a dog with painful hips or a painful back. A sudden bang causes them to jump and rapidly tense their muscles. That movement hurts.
The brain can begin connecting the sound with the pain.
Eventually, hearing the noise may trigger fear even before anything physically uncomfortable happens.
The study was relatively small, so we shouldn't conclude that pain explains every case of later-onset noise fear. But clinically, it gives us an important reason to investigate sudden behavioral changes rather than simply labeling them as an anxiety problem.
Arthritis, spinal discomfort, dental pain, ear disease, and other medical conditions may all warrant consideration depending on the individual dog.
Severe noise fear can be unmistakable. A dog may tremble violently, hide, attempt to escape, or desperately seek their owner.
Milder anxiety is easier to miss.
Watch for changes such as:
panting or pacing when the environment isn't hot
suddenly becoming unusually alert or unable to settle
ears pulled backward, a lowered body posture, or a tucked tail
hiding, retreating, or trying to leave
lip licking, repeated swallowing, yawning, or seeking unusually close contact
Some dogs bark or lunge toward whatever is making the noise. That can look aggressive or excited, but heightened arousal or fear may be contributing.
Research into household sounds has also suggested that owners sometimes underestimate subtle signs of canine fear.
If you're unsure, record your dog's behavior from a safe distance and show the video to your veterinarian or a suitably qualified behavior professional. Video can reveal subtle patterns that are difficult to remember accurately after the event.
Yes.
Noise sensitivity often deserves attention even when the initial reaction seems fairly mild.
Every frightening exposure gives the brain another opportunity to strengthen the association between that sound and danger. Some dogs therefore progress from mild alertness to hiding, trembling, escape attempts, or anticipatory anxiety.
That doesn't mean worsening is inevitable.
Early management can reduce frightening exposures while controlled behavior modification teaches the dog a different emotional response.
For mild cases, this may involve carefully designed desensitization and counterconditioning. Desensitization introduces the sound at an intensity low enough that the dog remains comfortable. Counterconditioning pairs that sound with something positive, such as particularly valuable food.
Severe noise anxiety may require veterinary treatment alongside behavioral work. Depending on the dog and trigger, your veterinarian may discuss situational anti-anxiety medication, longer-term treatment, environmental management, or referral to a veterinary behaviorist.
The goal isn't simply to make the dog look quieter.
The real target is how frightened they feel.
First, don't deliberately recreate the noise to "test" them.
If possible, note exactly what happened before and during the reaction. Videos can be useful when they can be obtained without deliberately exposing the dog to distress.
Then consider whether anything else has changed.
A dog developing significant noise sensitivity for the first time, particularly in middle or older age, deserves a veterinary examination. Tell your veterinarian about changes in mobility, sleep, appetite, hearing, vision, activity, interactions, or willingness to be touched as well as the noise fear itself.
Once medical problems have been considered, the next step depends on severity.
A dog who briefly startles at the blender but immediately recovers is very different from a dog who trembles for two hours after hearing it.
Fear should be assessed by intensity, duration, recovery time, and impact on everyday life, not simply by whether the dog reacts at all.
A new noise fear can follow a frightening experience, but there isn't always an obvious trigger. Pain, age-related changes, alterations in hearing or sensory processing, and other medical issues may also contribute. Sudden behavioral changes in an adult or older dog are worth discussing with your veterinarian.
Loudness isn't the only property that determines whether a sound is unpleasant. Frequency, pitch, intermittency, predictability, previous associations, and the individual dog's sensitivity all matter. Research suggests that high-frequency intermittent household noises can produce particularly strong reactions in some dogs.
Yes. Noise sensitivity can emerge or worsen later in life. When it appears unexpectedly in a mature dog, I recommend considering medical factors as well as behavioral ones, particularly pain.
Not necessarily. Dogs may habituate to harmless sounds when exposure occurs at a manageable level, but repeatedly frightening a dog can make sensitivity worse instead. Controlled desensitization is very different from simply exposing a dog to the frightening sound over and over.
Yes, if your dog seeks reassurance. Calm contact does not "reward" fear in the way giving treats might reinforce a deliberately performed behavior. Fear is an emotional response. You don't need to force physical contact, but allowing your dog to remain close to you or providing a safe hiding place is perfectly reasonable.
Vacuum cleaners combine several potentially challenging features: considerable noise, movement, changes in direction, vibration, and proximity. Some dogs retreat, while others bark or chase the vacuum. Gradual exposure while the machine is off, followed by carefully controlled exposure at a distance, can help some dogs.
A single highly frightening experience can create a powerful learned association, although it doesn't necessarily mean the fear will be permanent. Early management and appropriately designed behavior modification can often substantially improve the dog's response.
Speak to your veterinarian if fear is intense, worsening, suddenly develops, causes escape attempts or injury, prevents normal activities, or takes your dog a long time to recover from. New noise sensitivity in an older dog is particularly worth investigating for underlying medical problems.
Dogs don't become afraid of particular sounds simply because those sounds are loud.
Noise sensitivity develops through an interaction between the sound itself and the individual dog experiencing it. Genetics influence susceptibility. Early experiences shape how the brain interprets the world. Frightening events create learned associations. Unpredictability can amplify anxiety, and in some dogs, pain or other medical changes may contribute.
That is also why two dogs living in the same house can hear exactly the same thunderclap and have completely different reactions.
Most importantly, fear isn't stubbornness or bad behavior. When a dog hides beneath the bed because a smoke alarm chirps or starts shaking when fireworks begin, their nervous system is responding to something it believes could be dangerous.
Once we understand that, the goal changes from making the dog "stop reacting" to helping their brain feel safer.
And that is a much better place to start.
