If your dog starts trembling during a thunderstorm, at the veterinary clinic, or when something unfamiliar enters their world, anxiety could be the reason. Dogs can shake when anxious because fear activates the body's stress response, triggering changes in the nervous system and muscle activity.
It is essentially the canine version of getting shaky hands before giving a speech or feeling your knees wobble during a frightening experience. Your dog's body is preparing to deal with a perceived threat, even when there is no physical danger.
Shaking is particularly common with intense or sudden fear, including noise sensitivity, but anxiety is only one possible explanation. Pain, nausea, being cold, poisoning, muscle weakness, and neurological disorders can all cause trembling too.
As a vet, this is why I am much more interested in the context around shaking than the shaking itself. A dog who trembles when fireworks start and relaxes once everything becomes quiet tells me a very different story from a dog who suddenly starts shaking while resting peacefully at home.
Anxiety can make dogs shake because fear activates the sympathetic nervous system, the body's rapid-response system for dealing with threats.
Stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol contribute to physical changes such as increased heart rate, faster breathing, heightened alertness, and muscle tension.

Loud or unpredictable noises are particularly common triggers. Research has found shaking and trembling among the recognized signs of noise-related fear in dogs.
Context matters. A dog who reliably shakes during stressful situations is more likely to be experiencing anxiety than one who trembles unexpectedly without an obvious trigger.
Never automatically assume shaking is behavioral. Pain, toxins, illness, neurological problems, low blood sugar, and other medical conditions can cause similar symptoms.
Reducing exposure to overwhelming triggers and using gradual behavior modification can help, while severe or persistent anxiety may require veterinary or behavioral treatment.

Anxiety is not just something happening inside your dog's head. It produces genuine physiological changes throughout the body.
When the brain identifies something potentially threatening, it activates several interconnected stress-response pathways. One of the fastest involves the sympathetic nervous system, often described as the "fight or flight" system.
Adrenaline and related chemicals are released, increasing heart rate, redirecting blood flow, sharpening attention, and preparing skeletal muscles for rapid movement.
At the same time, another system called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis increases production of the stress hormone cortisol.
A 2024 review of cortisol physiology in dogs describes cortisol as an important part of the canine response to environmental and psychological stress and highlights its relationship with behavioral and physiological changes.
This response is incredibly useful when there really is danger. If a wild canine suddenly sees a predator, spending several minutes calmly evaluating its options would be a poor survival strategy.
Our domestic dogs still possess the same biological alarm system. Unfortunately, that alarm can be activated by something as harmless as a smoke alarm chirping, a delivery van arriving, or fireworks several streets away.
Muscles become primed for action during the stress response.
Your dog's nervous system is essentially telling the body, "Something important is happening. Be ready."
Muscle tension increases, and rapid involuntary contractions can produce visible trembling or shaking. The dog may shiver throughout the body or you may notice smaller tremors affecting the legs, shoulders, jaw, or hindquarters.
Not every anxious dog shakes. Some become restless. Others freeze, pant, bark, hide, become unusually clingy, or attempt to escape.
Dogs differ significantly in how they express emotional stress, which is why looking at their entire body language is so important.
Anxiety-related shaking usually has a recognizable pattern.
There is often a clear trigger, such as thunder, fireworks, construction noise, visitors, car travel, being left alone, grooming, or entering the veterinary clinic.
You may also see:
panting despite the dog not being hot
pacing or repeatedly changing position
lowered body posture or crouching
ears held back and a tucked tail
hiding, retreating, or trying to escape
Some dogs seek intense physical contact with their owners. Others want to disappear underneath the nearest bed.
Neither reaction means the dog is being dramatic or deliberately difficult. They are simply different attempts to cope with a situation that feels threatening.
Noise sensitivity deserves particular attention because it is remarkably common.
A large study involving 13,715 pet dogs found that 32% were highly fearful of at least one type of noise, making noise sensitivity the most common anxiety-related trait investigated. Fireworks were particularly problematic, with 26% of dogs showing marked fear of them.
Importantly, spectacular events such as fireworks and thunderstorms are not the only sounds that can frighten dogs.
Researchers investigating responses to everyday household sounds found signs of fear and stress associated with appliances, electronic beeps, alarms, and other common noises. In their survey of 386 dog owners, 13% reported shaking in response to household sounds.
High-frequency intermittent noises, such as smoke detector chirps, produced particularly strong responses in some dogs.
This is useful information for owners because a dog's reaction to a seemingly insignificant sound can easily be misunderstood. What sounds mildly irritating to us may be much more intense to a dog with sensitive hearing.
Shaking becomes much more informative when you look at what the rest of the dog is doing.
A trembling dog who is also crouching, panting, hiding behind you, and repeatedly glancing toward a thunderstorm is giving you a fairly coherent picture of fear.
Other anxiety-related behaviors can be much subtler.
You might notice repeated lip licking when no food is present, yawning despite the dog not being tired, scanning the environment, becoming unusually vigilant, refusing treats, salivating, whining, barking, or suddenly becoming unable to settle.
Research examining dogs exposed to household noises found behaviors including trembling, panting, retreating, pacing, hiding, whining, and tucked ears. The researchers also found that owners sometimes underestimated the degree of fear their dogs were experiencing.
That last point matters.
Dogs do not need to be frantically trying to escape through a window before we take anxiety seriously. Repeated lower-level signs are still telling us that the dog is struggling.
Not necessarily.
Just as people vary enormously in how visibly they respond to nervousness, dogs vary too.
One dog may shake during relatively mild uncertainty while another remains outwardly still until extremely frightened. Shaking therefore cannot be used as a precise "anxiety meter."
What matters more is whether the behavior is recurrent, what triggers it, whether the dog can recover once the trigger disappears, and how much the anxiety interferes with normal life.
A dog who briefly trembles during an annual veterinary examination but otherwise copes well presents a very different welfare concern from a dog who shakes for hours whenever their owner prepares to leave the house.

There is no good evidence that calmly comforting a frightened dog somehow rewards fear and makes them more anxious.
Fear is an emotional response, not a trick your dog has performed to earn attention.
If your dog actively seeks contact, calm reassurance can help them feel safer. You might sit nearby, allow them to lean against you, or speak gently.
The important word is calm.
Frantic fussing, repeatedly restraining the dog, or becoming visibly distressed yourself may increase arousal. Instead, aim to provide a reassuring presence while giving your dog choices.
Some dogs prefer physical contact. Others want to hide in a quiet room. Respecting that preference is often more helpful than insisting that they interact.
First, reduce the intensity of the trigger whenever possible.
During fireworks or thunderstorms, move your dog somewhere quieter, close curtains, and use background sound to reduce sudden changes in noise. Give them access to a familiar bed, crate, or hiding area if they already regard it as a safe place.
Do not drag a frightened dog out of hiding.
If possible, remain calm and allow the episode to pass without adding additional pressure.
Food can also provide useful information. A mildly concerned dog may still happily take high-value treats. A dog who normally loves food but suddenly refuses it may be too frightened to learn effectively at that moment.
Once the dog reaches that level of distress, the priority is usually helping them feel safe rather than trying to conduct a training session in the middle of the crisis.
The long-term solution depends on what is causing the anxiety.
For predictable triggers, desensitization and counterconditioning can be extremely useful.
Desensitization means exposing your dog to such a mild version of the trigger that it does not cause significant fear. Counterconditioning means pairing that mild exposure with something pleasant, usually food or another reward.
For example, a dog frightened by thunder recordings might initially hear them at barely audible volume while enjoying treats. The sound can gradually become louder over multiple sessions, provided the dog remains relaxed.
The important part is gradual.
Flooding a frightened dog with the full-strength trigger in the hope that they will "get used to it" can instead increase fear.
Dogs with severe anxiety, panic attacks, separation-related problems, or serious noise phobias should ideally be assessed by a veterinarian and, where appropriate, a qualified clinical animal behavior professional. Behavioral medication can sometimes dramatically improve welfare and make training possible when a dog's nervous system is otherwise constantly overwhelmed.

Dogs can tremble for numerous medical reasons.
Cold temperatures are an obvious example, particularly for small, lean, short-haired, elderly, or very young dogs. Pain is another common possibility. Nausea, fever, weakness, low blood glucose, certain toxic substances, metabolic disease, and neurological disorders can all produce shaking or tremors.
Pain deserves particular consideration when behavior suddenly changes.
Recent research examining dogs referred for behavioral problems highlights how pain can sometimes masquerade as, contribute to, or worsen behavioral symptoms. In one published example, worsening noise sensitivity and trembling ultimately accompanied significant degenerative and spinal disease.
Earlier research has similarly suggested that dogs developing unusual or worsening noise sensitivity should be assessed for underlying musculoskeletal pain.
In other words, "my dog is anxious" should never become an assumption that prevents us from looking for physical disease.
Context gives us useful clues, although it cannot provide a definitive diagnosis.
Anxiety shaking typically begins in association with recognizable situations and improves when the perceived threat disappears.
Medical tremors may occur without any obvious emotional trigger. They may happen while the dog is relaxed or asleep, become progressively more frequent, affect particular parts of the body, or appear alongside other physical symptoms.
Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, collapse, difficulty walking, unusual eye movements, disorientation, reduced appetite, obvious pain, altered breathing, or changes in consciousness.
Video is extremely helpful.
If your dog experiences intermittent shaking that disappears before you reach the clinic, record an episode on your phone if it is safe to do so. A short video showing the dog's posture, movement, responsiveness, and surroundings can give your veterinarian information that a verbal description simply cannot capture.
Arrange veterinary assessment if the shaking is new, unexplained, persistent, worsening, or happening without a recognizable anxiety trigger.
Seek urgent veterinary advice if shaking is accompanied by collapse, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, marked pain, loss of coordination, abnormal awareness, seizures, or possible exposure to toxins.
You should also speak to your vet if you know anxiety is causing the trembling but episodes are becoming frequent or severe.
