If your dog starts pacing before you have even heard the first rumble of thunder, they are not necessarily predicting the weather through some mysterious canine sixth sense. They may simply be detecting the storm much earlier than you can.
Thunderstorm anxiety in dogs can be surprisingly complex. Thunder is certainly part of the problem, but a storm brings a whole collection of potential triggers: flashes of lightning, wind, rain hitting windows, changes in light, smells, atmospheric conditions, and possibly changes in barometric pressure or static electricity. Some dogs appear anxious long before the loudest part of the storm arrives.
For mildly affected dogs, you may notice little more than restlessness or an increased desire to sit beside you. At the other end of the spectrum, I have seen dogs become genuinely panicked, trembling, panting, hiding, scratching at doors, or desperately trying to escape. That is not disobedience or attention-seeking. It is a fear response.
Thunderstorm anxiety is also worth addressing early because repeated frightening experiences can reinforce fear rather than making a dog “get used to it.”
Thunderstorm anxiety can involve more than fear of thunder, including lightning, wind, rain, and other environmental changes.
Signs range from subtle lip licking and restlessness to trembling, hiding, destruction, and escape attempts.
Dogs do not necessarily become accustomed to storms through repeated exposure; fear can become progressively worse.
Creating a quiet, secure retreat can help reduce exposure to storm-related sights and sounds.
Calm reassurance is fine if your dog seeks you out. You cannot reinforce the emotion of fear simply by comforting them.
Gradual desensitization and counterconditioning can help some dogs, although storm recordings cannot reproduce every component of a real thunderstorm.
Dogs with severe storm anxiety may benefit from prescription anxiety medication alongside behavioral treatment.
Sudden development of noise sensitivity in an older dog deserves a veterinary examination because pain or other health problems may contribute.

Thunderstorm anxiety describes excessive fear, anxiety, or panic associated with thunderstorms.
You may also hear terms such as storm phobia, thunderstorm phobia, or storm-related noise aversion. Although these are sometimes used interchangeably, dogs vary considerably in the intensity of their reaction.
A dog who briefly looks concerned after a loud crack of thunder but quickly settles is experiencing something very different from a dog who spends an entire storm shaking under the furniture.
Fear itself is a normal survival mechanism. If a sudden explosion occurs nearby, paying attention is sensible. It becomes a welfare problem when the response is disproportionate, prolonged, difficult to recover from, or interferes with normal behavior.
Noise sensitivity is certainly not unusual in dogs. In a large study of more than 13,000 Finnish pet dogs, approximately 32% were reported to be highly fearful of at least one type of noise, making noise sensitivity the most common anxiety-related trait measured. There is rarely one simple explanation.
Thunder can be sudden, extremely loud, and difficult for a dog to locate. Its intensity also varies throughout a storm.
Unpredictability matters. If your dog cannot determine when the next frightening noise will happen, they may remain constantly alert rather than relaxing between thunderclaps.
Research involving dogs exposed to recorded thunder has demonstrated measurable behavioral and physiological responses, including changes associated with fear and arousal.
Thunderstorm anxiety is particularly interesting because some dogs react before there is audible thunder.
Possible cues include:
darkening skies and flashes of lightning
wind and rain
changes in smells or humidity
changes in atmospheric pressure
static electricity
Researchers studying storm anxiety have discussed these non-auditory meteorological cues, although we do not yet have strong evidence identifying exactly which ones individual dogs detect or how important each is. See recent research on storm-associated anxiety in dogs
This also helps explain why playing thunder recordings does not always reproduce a dog's reaction to an actual storm. A speaker can reproduce some of the sound, but not the full sensory event occurring outside.
Fear can develop through learning.
Perhaps a puppy was outside when an enormous thunderclap occurred directly overhead. Or a frightened dog tried to escape during a storm and injured themselves.
The brain becomes very good at connecting events that predict danger. Eventually, the wind picking up or rain beginning may be enough to trigger anxiety because the dog has learned what usually happens next.
Some dogs appear inherently more sensitive to noises and unfamiliar situations than others.
Genetics probably contribute, but environment matters too. Research involving thousands of pet dogs has found associations between reduced puppyhood socialization and higher levels of non-social fears, including noise sensitivity. These associations do not mean an owner has “caused” their dog's anxiety, but they highlight how genetics, development, learning, and life experiences interact. The classic picture is a trembling dog hiding in the bathroom, but storm anxiety can be much subtler.
Watch for panting when the room is not hot, pacing, inability to settle, yawning, lip licking, drooling, trembling, unusually close following, hiding, refusing treats, whining, barking, dilated pupils, attempting to climb onto people, or trying to escape.
Severely affected dogs may scratch doors, damage crates or windows, urinate or defecate indoors, or injure themselves while attempting to flee.
One reason noise anxiety is sometimes missed is that people tend to notice dramatic behavior more readily than quieter stress signals. Probably, although “sense” does not necessarily mean anything supernatural.
Dogs have excellent hearing and smell, and they may notice distant thunder, changing wind, rain, or environmental odors before we do.
Researchers have also proposed barometric pressure and static electricity as potential components of storm anxiety. At present, however, the evidence is much stronger for the general idea that storms provide multiple sensory cues than for claims that dogs reliably detect one particular atmospheric change.
So when your dog mysteriously disappears into the bathroom 20 minutes before you realize a storm is coming, they may simply have noticed environmental signals that you missed.
I would not rely on it.
Some fears remain stable, but others become progressively more severe with repeated exposure.
This is a crucial distinction because simply exposing a frightened dog to more thunderstorms is not the same as behavioral desensitization. If every exposure produces intense fear, the dog's nervous system may become increasingly sensitized.
Instead of learning, “That noise doesn't matter,” the dog can learn, “That terrifying thing keeps happening.”
Earlier intervention is therefore usually easier than trying to manage years of established panic.
Your first priority during an actual storm is not training. It is helping your dog feel safe.
Give them access to whichever part of the house they naturally prefer. Bathrooms, closets, interior bedrooms, basements, or covered crates are common choices because they can reduce visual and auditory stimulation.
Close curtains or blinds to reduce lightning flashes. Background music, television, a fan, or white noise may help mask some of the external sound.
If your dog chooses to hide, allow them to hide. Do not drag them out to “show them there is nothing to worry about.”
Likewise, if they come to you for reassurance, you can comfort them.
Owners are sometimes warned that petting a frightened dog will “reward the fear.” Fear is an emotional state, not a trick the dog has performed for a biscuit. Calm social support is perfectly reasonable if your dog finds it reassuring.
The important part is following your dog's preference. Some dogs want physical contact. Others want to disappear beneath a bed and be left alone.
Behavior modification can make a substantial difference, particularly when anxiety is mild to moderate.
Two important techniques are desensitization and counterconditioning.
Desensitization means exposing the dog to such a mild version of the trigger that it does not provoke significant fear and then increasing the intensity very gradually.
Counterconditioning means pairing that trigger with something pleasant, often exceptional food or play.
For example, very quiet storm recordings might initially play while your dog eats a particularly desirable treat. The volume can gradually increase over multiple sessions as long as your dog remains relaxed.
The volume should not be increased simply because the dog tolerated yesterday's session. Their body language determines the pace.
Research reviews support counterconditioning, relaxation training, and carefully conducted desensitization for canine noise fears. That means a dog may happily munch treats while listening to recorded thunder and still struggle when the sky darkens and the real storm rolls in.
Some owners find pressure garments helpful, and they are generally low risk when properly fitted and tolerated by the dog.
However, I would view them as an adjunct rather than a primary treatment for significant thunderstorm anxiety.
A 2024 systematic review examined the available research on compression wraps in dogs. Although some studies reported improvements in behavior or physiological measures, the overall evidence was limited and affected by small sample sizes and methodological weaknesses. If your dog appears calmer in one, there is little reason not to use it. Just do not let a pressure wrap delay proper treatment for a dog experiencing severe panic.
There is nothing virtuous about making a terrified dog endure a storm without medication.
For moderate or severe anxiety, medication can reduce suffering and may make behavioral therapy considerably more effective.
Depending on the individual dog, veterinarians may consider medications intended for predictable events, longer-term anxiety treatment, or a combination of approaches.
One option studied for noise-associated fear is dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel. A randomized placebo-controlled trial found a significantly greater proportion of dogs receiving dexmedetomidine were rated as having a good or excellent treatment response during fireworks compared with dogs receiving placebo. Imepitoin has also been studied for noise-related fear. A 2026 evidence review concluded that moderate evidence supports its ability to reduce owner-rated fear and anxiety associated with sudden loud noises, including thunderstorms and fireworks, although adverse effects can occur and availability or licensing varies between countries. Other medications may be appropriate depending on the dog's medical history and the type and frequency of their anxiety.
The goal should not simply be to make a dog sleepy. An appropriately chosen treatment should reduce the emotional experience of fear.
Speak to your veterinarian well before storm season if possible. The middle of a severe thunderstorm is a particularly inconvenient moment to discover that your dog's treatment plan needs adjusting.
A dog who develops significant noise sensitivity suddenly, particularly later in life, deserves a veterinary examination.
Pain is one consideration.
A small clinical study comparing dogs with noise sensitivity found that dogs with underlying musculoskeletal pain tended to develop noise sensitivity later in life than dogs without identified pain. That does not mean arthritis causes every new fear of thunder. It means behavioral change can occasionally be a clue to an underlying physical problem.
Changes in hearing, vision, cognitive function, neurological health, or general wellbeing can also alter how a dog responds to frightening events.
We cannot prevent every case, especially when genetic temperament contributes, but positive early experiences can help.
Puppies can be introduced gently to different noises while doing enjoyable activities, provided the sounds remain quiet enough that the puppy stays relaxed.
Adult dogs without an existing noise fear can benefit from similar preventive training.
The important word is gentle.
Playing thunderstorms at maximum volume to “get the puppy used to them” risks achieving exactly the opposite.
Research reviewing preventive strategies suggests that positive exposure and training before serious fear develops can substantially reduce the risk of future noise fears.
Shaking or trembling is a common physical sign of fear. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, essentially preparing the body to respond to potential danger. You may also see panting, pacing, drooling, dilated pupils, or attempts to hide.
Bathrooms and similar interior rooms may feel safer because they tend to have fewer windows and can reduce exposure to lightning flashes and outside noise. Some theories have also suggested that particular locations may affect exposure to static electricity, although evidence for this explanation remains limited. If your dog has chosen a safe hiding place, it is usually sensible to let them use it.
No. You do not need to ignore a frightened dog. If they seek reassurance from you and physical contact helps them settle, calmly comfort them. Equally, do not force interaction on a dog who prefers to hide.
A dog with mild anxiety may cope adequately in a familiar safe space. A dog with severe storm anxiety should ideally not be left alone if this can reasonably be avoided, particularly if they have a history of destructive escape attempts or self-injury. Discuss severe anxiety with your veterinarian so you have a management plan for unavoidable absences.
Fear can develop after a particularly frightening event, but new noise sensitivity can also accompany pain, aging, sensory changes, or other medical problems. A veterinary assessment is advisable when an adult or older dog develops significant storm anxiety unexpectedly.
Not necessarily. Uncontrolled exposure that repeatedly causes severe fear can make anxiety worse. Effective desensitization uses carefully controlled exposures that remain below the dog's fear threshold.
Evidence for many supplements, herbal products, pheromones, and similar remedies is considerably weaker than the evidence supporting environmental management, behavioral therapy, and certain prescription medications. They may occasionally have a supporting role, but dogs experiencing substantial distress deserve treatments with stronger evidence behind them.
Speak to your veterinarian if your dog trembles or pants for prolonged periods, cannot settle, refuses food, damages property, attempts to escape, injures themselves, or takes a long time to recover after storms. You should also arrange an examination if significant noise anxiety develops suddenly.
Thunderstorm anxiety is easy to underestimate because storms eventually pass. For the dog experiencing it, however, those hours can involve genuine fear.
The encouraging part is that we have far better options than telling frightened dogs to simply endure it.
Start with practical management: provide a secure retreat, reduce flashes and noise where possible, and allow your dog to seek whatever social support they find comforting. Between storms, carefully planned counterconditioning and desensitization may help change their emotional response.
For dogs experiencing significant anxiety, involve your veterinarian early. Behavioral treatment and appropriate medication are not competing approaches. In many cases they work best together.
And if your dog disappears into the safest room in the house while the sky still looks perfectly clear, it may be worth checking the weather forecast. Sometimes the dog really did notice the storm before you did.
