If you have ever been more irritable, emotional, or easily overwhelmed after a terrible night's sleep, you already have an intuitive sense of how closely sleep and emotional health are connected. Dogs appear to have a similar relationship with sleep.
A dog who is anxious may find it harder to settle and sleep deeply. At the same time, a dog who is repeatedly disturbed, chronically overtired, or unable to get enough restorative sleep may become more reactive and less able to cope with everyday challenges.
This can create a frustrating cycle: anxiety disrupts sleep, and poor sleep may make anxiety-related behavior worse.
Research into canine sleep is still relatively young, so we cannot simply translate everything we know about sleep-deprived humans directly to dogs. However, studies of pet dogs increasingly show connections between sleep, emotional experiences, learning, memory, and behavior.
As a veterinarian, I think sleep is one of the most easily overlooked parts of behavioral health. When an anxious dog comes into the clinic, people understandably focus on exercise, training, enrichment, supplements, medication, or avoiding triggers. Yet sometimes we also need to ask a much simpler question: When does this dog actually get the opportunity to switch off?
Sleep and anxiety can influence each other in both directions: anxiety can disrupt sleep, while insufficient or fragmented sleep may worsen behavioral problems.
Dogs do not normally sleep only at night. They are polyphasic sleepers, meaning they naturally sleep in several periods throughout the day and night.
A large study involving 1,330 dogs found associations between sleep patterns, ease of waking, and caregiver-reported behavioral problems.
Sleep plays an important role in learning and memory consolidation, which matters when anxious dogs are undergoing behavior modification or training.
Stressful experiences can alter the structure of a dog's subsequent sleep.
More activity is not always the solution for an anxious dog. Constant exercise, daycare, training, or stimulation can inadvertently reduce opportunities for restorative rest.
Changes in sleep can also indicate pain, cognitive decline, illness, medication effects, or other medical problems and should not automatically be blamed on anxiety.

Sleep is not simply a period when nothing is happening.
During sleep, the brain cycles through different stages that support processes including memory, learning, neurological recovery, and emotional processing. Dogs experience both non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, broadly comparable to sleep stages seen in humans.
Dogs are also naturally polyphasic sleepers. Rather than remaining awake throughout the entire day and sleeping in one uninterrupted block overnight, most dogs sleep at night and take additional periods of sleep or rest during the daytime.
Exactly how much sleep a dog needs varies considerably.
Age is particularly important. Puppies tend to sleep more during the day, while older dogs may also spend increasing amounts of time asleep. Health, activity, environment, breed, lifestyle, and individual temperament can all influence sleep patterns.
In one large study of young dogs, owners reported an average total sleep duration of approximately 11.2 hours per 24 hours in 16-week-old puppies and 10.8 hours in 12-month-old dogs. These figures should not be treated as universal targets, but they illustrate how much of a dog's day may naturally be devoted to sleep.
The important question is therefore not whether your dog hits an exact number of hours. It is whether they have enough opportunity to obtain restful, relatively undisturbed sleep for their individual needs.
There is growing evidence that sleep characteristics and behavioral health are connected, although researchers have not yet established a simple cause-and-effect equation where a particular amount of lost sleep produces a predictable level of anxiety.
One particularly useful study examined sleep patterns and caregiver-reported behavioral problems in 1,330 dogs.
Researchers found that dogs sleeping fewer than eight hours while their caregiver was in bed showed greater reported behavioral problem severity. Dogs that were more easily disturbed while sleeping during the day also had higher reported behavioral problem scores. Interestingly, very long reported nighttime sleep was also associated with behavioral problems, demonstrating that "more sleep" does not necessarily mean "better emotional health."
Importantly, this type of observational study cannot prove that poor sleep caused the behavior.
An anxious dog may sleep poorly because they are constantly listening for noises, following their owner, scanning the environment, or responding to triggers. Alternatively, disturbed sleep could make that dog's emotional regulation worse. In many dogs, both processes may be happening simultaneously.
That is why I tend to think of sleep and anxiety as two gears connected inside the same machine. Turn one and the other may move too.
An anxious nervous system is designed to remain alert.
When a dog perceives potential danger, their stress response prepares them to notice and respond quickly to threats. Heart rate and breathing may change, stress hormones are released, muscles become primed for action, and attention becomes focused on what is happening around them.
This is useful if genuine danger is approaching.
It is considerably less useful when the "danger" is the delivery driver, distant fireworks, a household appliance, another dog outside, or the possibility that their owner might leave.
An anxious dog may therefore:
take a long time to settle
repeatedly change sleeping positions or locations
wake at small noises
follow family members instead of staying asleep
pant, pace, or remain vigilant at night
appear exhausted but still unable to relax
Dogs with separation-related anxiety may also spend periods when their owner is absent monitoring the door or windows rather than sleeping normally.
This matters because lying quietly is not necessarily the same as sleeping. A dog stretched on the sofa with one eye tracking every movement in the house may look relaxed while remaining neurologically "on duty."
Interestingly, researchers have demonstrated that what happens to a dog before sleep can alter the sleep that follows.
In one experimental study, dogs experienced either positive social interactions, involving activities such as petting and play, or negative experiences including separation and threatening social interactions.
Their subsequent sleep patterns differed depending on what they had experienced beforehand. The researchers found measurable changes in sleep structure following negative versus positive experiences, providing direct evidence that emotional events can influence canine sleep physiology.
This does not mean that one stressful afternoon permanently damages a dog's sleep.
It does help explain something owners frequently notice, though: after a particularly difficult experience, such as a frightening veterinary visit, thunderstorm, house move, unfamiliar visitors, or stressful encounter with another dog, their dog may sleep differently.
Some dogs crash afterward. Others remain restless and vigilant.
Both responses can be part of the body's attempt to recover from heightened arousal.
One useful way to understand the relationship between sleep and anxiety is through the concept of a dog's threshold.
Every dog has a point at which a stimulus becomes difficult to cope with.
Imagine a normally relaxed dog who hears another dog barking outside. On a good day, they may glance toward the window and return to sleep.
Now imagine the same dog after a noisy night, house guests, a long daycare session, repeated deliveries, and very little uninterrupted rest.
That identical bark may suddenly produce frantic barking, pacing, jumping at the window, or snapping when someone tries to move them.
The trigger has not necessarily become more frightening. The dog's coping capacity has shrunk.
Researchers studying kennelled dogs have also found that reduced sleep was associated with changes in daytime behavior, including decreased play and alert behavior and increased inactivity. The authors suggested that dogs may compensate for insufficient sleep by becoming inactive during the day.
This distinction is important because an overtired dog does not always look hyperactive. Sometimes they simply look flat, disengaged, irritable, or exhausted.
Sleep becomes particularly relevant when we are trying to help an anxious dog learn new responses.
Behavior modification relies on the dog's brain retaining information.
We might be teaching them that:
"People walking past the house are not a threat."
"Being alone for 30 seconds is safe."
"Thunder predicts something enjoyable rather than something terrifying."
"Looking at another dog calmly earns a reward."
Those associations have to be processed and remembered.
Research using non-invasive EEG recordings in dogs has provided evidence of sleep-dependent memory consolidation, meaning that sleep appears to participate in strengthening newly acquired information. Dogs' sleep EEG patterns changed following learning tasks, and characteristics of their sleep were associated with subsequent performance.
More recent research has continued investigating this relationship.
A 2024 study involving family dogs found that dogs exposed to a more rewarding training experience showed improvements in learning performance after an afternoon sleep opportunity under certain conditions.
A 2025 study examining targeted memory reactivation also reflects the growing scientific interest in how sleeping dogs process recently learned information.
So when we are helping an anxious dog, training and rest should not be viewed as competitors.
Rest may actually be part of the learning process.
This is an important practical point because anxious dogs are frequently prescribed activity as though exhaustion itself were a treatment.
Exercise is enormously valuable. Dogs need physical movement, exploration, social opportunities where appropriate, and mental stimulation.
But "tire them out" can become counterproductive.
A schedule containing a long morning walk, daycare, afternoon training, puzzle feeders, visitors, evening fetch, another walk, and constant interaction may leave very little time for genuinely undisturbed sleep.
For some high-arousal dogs, more stimulation produces a dog who is simultaneously exhausted and unable to settle.
Think less about creating the most tired dog possible and more about creating an appropriate rhythm:
activity → decompression → sleep → activity
A sniffing walk followed by two quiet hours at home may sometimes benefit an anxious dog more than another intensive training session.
First, protect opportunities for sleep.
Give your dog access to somewhere comfortable where people will not repeatedly touch, move, call, or climb over them. Children should understand that a sleeping dog needs space.
For noise-sensitive dogs, placing the bed away from windows, doors, busy hallways, or household appliances can make an enormous difference.
Predictability also helps many anxious dogs. A fairly consistent pattern of walks, meals, quiet periods, and bedtime reduces the number of surprises their nervous system needs to manage.
Consider whether your dog's schedule contains genuine downtime. Daycare, visitors, car journeys, training sessions, dog parks, grooming appointments, and even enjoyable activities all involve stimulation.
Some dogs need a recovery day after unusually intense experiences.
And watch quality, not simply quantity. Twelve hours spent repeatedly waking every few minutes is different from twelve hours of comfortable, settled rest.
A sudden change in sleep should never automatically be attributed to anxiety.
Dogs who are uncomfortable often sleep poorly.
Arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, urinary disease, itching, breathing disorders, neurological disease, endocrine conditions, and many other medical problems can produce nighttime restlessness or altered sleep.
Pain is an especially common culprit. A senior dog who repeatedly gets up, circles, changes beds, or struggles to settle may not be "just getting old." They may be uncomfortable.
Older dogs can also experience changes in their sleep-wake cycle associated with canine cognitive dysfunction. Research has demonstrated substantial age-related changes in canine sleep patterns, including increased daytime sleep and greater disruption at night in elderly dogs.
Medication can alter sleep too. Some drugs cause sedation, while others may increase restlessness or change sleep architecture.
Speak to your veterinarian if your dog suddenly begins sleeping much more or less than usual, repeatedly wakes at night, seems distressed while trying to settle, pants or paces overnight, vocalizes unexpectedly, or shows other changes in behavior or health.
Treating the underlying problem may improve both sleep and anxiety.
When I assess an anxious dog, I do not consider sleep a standalone treatment.
A dog with significant noise phobia, separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, or another behavioral disorder may still need environmental management, carefully structured behavior modification, veterinary assessment, medication, or support from a qualified veterinary behavior professional.
But sleep belongs alongside those interventions.
There is little value in scheduling repeated desensitization sessions for a dog whose nervous system never gets adequate recovery time.
Similarly, if a dog's days are packed with stimulation because their owner is desperately trying to "keep them busy," creating protected rest periods may be one of the simplest adjustments available.
Sometimes helping an anxious dog involves adding something.
Sometimes it involves removing things from the timetable.
There is no single evidence-based number that suits every adult dog. Research suggests that many pet dogs spend a substantial portion of each 24-hour period sleeping, with sleep requirements varying according to age, health, environment, activity, and individual temperament.
Rather than aiming for an exact target, pay attention to whether your dog can settle easily, obtains undisturbed sleep, wakes normally, and appears appropriately alert and comfortable when awake.
Some do, while others sleep less.
Anxiety can cause vigilance and repeated waking, but prolonged stress can also leave dogs exhausted and inactive. Increased sleep can additionally occur because of pain, illness, medication, aging, or reduced activity, so a significant change deserves investigation.
Anxious dogs often remain more vigilant to potential threats. Their brain may continue monitoring environmental sounds even when they appear to be resting, making relatively minor noises enough to trigger waking or defensive behavior.
Reducing environmental noise and providing a protected sleeping area can help, but pronounced sound sensitivity may also require behavioral treatment.
Generally, no.
Dogs naturally sleep at multiple points during the day and night, so deliberately preventing daytime sleep may simply create an overtired dog. Research into canine behavioral health gives us good reason to avoid recommending sleep deprivation as a strategy for managing behavior.
Not usually by itself.
Improving sleep may increase a dog's ability to cope, learn, and recover from stressful events, but clinically significant anxiety usually requires a broader plan addressing triggers, environment, behavior, physical health, and sometimes medication.
There is no universal rule.
Some dogs sleep more comfortably near their owner, while others prefer a quieter independent space. In a study of pet dogs that could choose whether to sleep with human company, most commonly chose a room where people were present, but individual preference matters more than imposing one particular arrangement.
If proximity to you helps your dog obtain genuinely restful sleep without causing other problems, there is no behavioral reason that sleeping nearby must automatically be discouraged.
Absolutely.
Pain can cause pacing, panting, repeated repositioning, reluctance to lie down, waking overnight, vocalization, and increased clinginess. These signs can easily be mistaken for anxiety, particularly in older dogs.
A veterinary examination is important when nighttime restlessness is new or worsening.
Sleep and anxiety in dogs are closely intertwined.
We know that emotional experiences can alter canine sleep, that sleep is involved in learning and memory, and that disturbed or unusual sleep patterns are associated with behavioral problems. What science cannot yet give us is one universal prescription for exactly how many hours every dog needs.
The practical message is simpler.
An anxious dog needs opportunities not only to exercise, explore, train, and learn, but also to recover.
If your dog seems permanently "switched on," consider looking at their day from a sleep perspective. Where are the quiet periods? How often are they disturbed? Can they genuinely relax without monitoring you, the front door, other animals, or activity outside?
Sometimes the missing piece of an anxiety plan is not another walk, another puzzle toy, or another training exercise.
It is several peaceful hours in which absolutely nothing happens.
