Stress does more than make a dog pace, pant, hide, or struggle to settle. It produces genuine physical changes throughout the body, including changes in the immune system.
So, can stress lower a dog’s immune system? Yes, particularly when stress is frequent, severe, or prolonged. Chronic stress can alter the way immune cells behave and communicate, potentially making the body less efficient at responding to infection, inflammation, and tissue damage.
However, there is an important bit of nuance here. Stress does not simply flip the immune system from “working” to “not working.” A short burst of stress may temporarily stimulate certain immune functions as the body prepares to deal with a possible threat. It is repeated or chronic stress that concerns us more because prolonged activation of the stress response can gradually disrupt normal immune regulation.
As a veterinarian, I think this is particularly important in dogs experiencing ongoing anxiety. Sometimes owners understandably focus on the visible behavior, such as barking, trembling, destruction, or restlessness. But if a dog spends much of every day feeling threatened or unable to relax, that stress is not confined to their behavior. Their whole body is participating.
Prolonged or repeated stress can alter a dog's immune response, although it does not simply “switch off” immunity.
Short-term stress and chronic stress can affect immunity differently; brief stress may temporarily stimulate some immune functions.
Cortisol and adrenaline help coordinate the stress response and also influence immune cells.
Recent canine research shows that stressful living environments can produce measurable changes in T-cell activity and other immune parameters.
Chronic stress may contribute to poorer recovery, altered inflammatory responses, and increased vulnerability to disease in some dogs, although it is rarely the only factor involved.
Behavioral signs such as pacing, panting, trembling, hypervigilance, hiding, and difficulty settling can indicate that a dog is struggling with ongoing stress.
Improving sleep, predictability, exercise, enrichment, social security, and treatment of underlying anxiety can all help reduce a dog's overall stress load.

The immune system and the brain are in constant conversation.
When your dog perceives something as threatening, the brain activates two major stress-response systems. One involves the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the familiar “fight or flight” response. The other is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis, which ultimately results in the release of cortisol.
Cortisol is often referred to as the “stress hormone,” but that description makes it sound rather more villainous than it deserves.
Dogs need cortisol. It helps regulate blood glucose, metabolism, blood pressure, inflammation, and immune activity. During an emergency, cortisol helps divert the body's resources toward whatever is most immediately important for survival.
If a dog suddenly hears a threatening noise, for example, there is little biological benefit in prioritizing digestion or long-term tissue repair at that precise moment. The body temporarily reallocates its resources toward responding to the perceived danger.
Problems arise when the alarm system rarely gets switched off.
A 2024 review of cortisol physiology in dogs describes the extensive relationship between cortisol, behavior, metabolism, inflammation, and immune regulation. Prolonged or abnormal activation of these pathways can have effects far beyond simply making a dog feel anxious.
Sometimes, but “immune suppression” is slightly too simple a description.
Stress can modulate immunity, meaning it changes how different parts of the immune system behave.
Immune cells carry receptors for hormones involved in the stress response, including glucocorticoids such as cortisol and chemicals released by the sympathetic nervous system. This means psychological stress can directly influence immune-cell activity.
Short-lived stress may actually enhance certain aspects of immunity. From an evolutionary point of view, that makes sense. If an animal is about to fight, flee, or potentially become injured, temporarily mobilizing immune defenses could be useful.
With prolonged stress, however, the pattern changes.
Chronic exposure to stress hormones can alter inflammation, lymphocyte activity, immune-cell distribution, and communication between different parts of the immune system. Depending on the circumstances, some aspects of immunity may become less responsive while others become dysregulated rather than simply weaker.
This is why I prefer to describe chronic stress as disrupting normal immune regulation rather than telling owners that anxiety simply “destroys” a dog's immune system.
We now have some interesting canine-specific evidence.
A 2026 study examining client-owned dogs and dogs living in shelters found measurable differences in immune activity associated with different environments and durations of stress.
Researchers identified differences in T lymphocytes, important cells involved in coordinating immune responses and recognizing infected or abnormal cells. Dogs undergoing short- and longer-term shelter stays showed differences in T-cell activation, memory-cell populations, and their capacity to expand when stimulated.
Importantly, the researchers concluded that chronic stress influenced canine immune status in a time-dependent way.
That fits with earlier research in dogs showing that stressful experiences such as transportation and hospitalization can alter specific measures of immune-cell function. A 2020 study of healthy pet dogs found changes in immune responses following transport, veterinary procedures, and hospitalization.
This does not mean every anxious dog will develop an infection or immune-mediated disease. Biology is rarely that tidy.
It does mean that emotional stress can produce measurable physiological changes in dogs rather than existing purely “in their heads.”
Imagine your dog's stress response as an emergency generator.
Turning it on during a power cut is exactly what it was designed for. Leaving it roaring in the garden continuously for six months is a different proposition.
A thunderstorm, veterinary visit, unfamiliar visitor, or car journey may cause a temporary surge in stress hormones. Once the situation ends, a resilient dog should gradually return toward their normal physiological baseline.
Chronic stress means the dog is repeatedly or persistently activating that system.
Common examples include dogs experiencing:
separation anxiety
ongoing conflict or fear involving another animal or person
frequent noise sensitivity
unpredictable or frightening handling
chronic pain
repeated disruption to their environment
This is also why two dogs exposed to the same event may respond very differently. One might recover within minutes, while another remains hypervigilant for hours.
The duration, intensity, predictability, and dog's individual perception of the stressor all matter.
Potentially, but it is important not to attribute every illness in an anxious dog to stress.
Immune defense depends on many things, including age, genetics, nutrition, vaccination status, underlying disease, medications, parasite exposure, sleep, and the infectious organisms a dog encounters.
Stress becomes another piece of that puzzle.
Experimental and clinical research across animal species shows that prolonged stress can interfere with immune defenses and inflammatory regulation. In dogs specifically, studies demonstrate measurable stress-associated changes in immune cells, although we still have much more to learn about how often those laboratory changes translate into clinically significant disease.
Older veterinary reviews of hospitalized dogs have also highlighted the potential for prolonged psychological stress to contribute to reduced immune efficiency, poorer wound healing, and altered responses to infection.
So I would not tell an owner, “Your dog caught this infection because they were anxious.”
I might instead say, “Long-term stress could be one factor making it harder for their body to function at its best.”
That is a much more defensible interpretation of the evidence.
Another reason this subject gets confusing is that a stressed immune system is not necessarily an inactive immune system.
Chronic stress can alter inflammatory regulation.
Inflammation is one of the immune system's essential tools. If your dog cuts a paw, inflammatory signals recruit cells and chemicals that help fight contamination and repair damaged tissue.
Too little inflammation can impair defense and healing.
Too much inflammation, or inflammation that occurs inappropriately, can damage healthy tissue.
Stress hormones help regulate this balance. When stress signaling becomes prolonged, the normal relationship between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems can become less well coordinated.
This is one reason researchers increasingly study stress as a whole-body phenomenon rather than separating “behavioral health” from “physical health.”
The digestive system deserves a mention because it is another major meeting point between stress and immunity.
A substantial proportion of the body's immune activity is associated with the gastrointestinal tract, where the immune system must constantly distinguish between harmless food and microorganisms, beneficial microbes, and genuine threats.
Stress can alter gut motility, intestinal signaling, and the microbial community living in the digestive tract.
A 2024 Scientific Reports study investigated the effects of acute stress on the canine gut microbiota, adding to growing evidence that stressful experiences can influence the gut environment as well as behavior and circulating stress hormones.
This does not mean every bout of stress causes “poor gut health,” but it helps explain why gastrointestinal signs and anxiety so frequently appear together in clinical practice.
Dogs do not all advertise stress in the same way.
Some are dramatically distressed. Others become quiet, withdrawn, or unusually clingy.
Possible signs include frequent panting when the dog is not hot, pacing, trembling, excessive licking, difficulty settling, hiding, yawning, lip licking, hypervigilance, irritability, changes in appetite, sleep disruption, gastrointestinal upset, and destructive behavior.
You may also notice that your dog seems unable to completely relax. They may sleep lightly, repeatedly jump up at small sounds, or constantly monitor where family members are.
No single behavior proves that a dog is chronically stressed.
Panting, appetite changes, lethargy, trembling, gastrointestinal problems, and behavioral changes can all occur with physical illness too. That is why veterinary assessment matters, particularly when symptoms are new or worsening.
Reducing unnecessary chronic stress is certainly good for overall health, although there is no single stress-reduction technique that functions as an “immune booster.”
In fact, I am cautious about the phrase boosting the immune system altogether. A healthy immune system needs balance rather than maximum activity.
The goal is to help the dog's nervous and hormonal systems spend less time behaving as though an emergency is underway.
Start by identifying the source of the stress wherever possible. A dog afraid of being left alone needs a different plan from a dog experiencing chronic arthritis pain or one frightened by another dog in the household.
Predictability can be enormously helpful. Regular meals, opportunities to toilet, appropriate exercise, adequate uninterrupted sleep, and consistent household routines give dogs fewer surprises to process.
Mental enrichment is useful too, provided the dog enjoys it. Sniffing walks, food searches, gentle training, chewing, and other species-appropriate activities can give dogs healthy opportunities to investigate and make choices.
For dogs frightened by veterinary visits, changing how they are handled can also make a measurable difference. A 2023 study investigating low-stress veterinary handling found a greater reduction in serum cortisol over repeated visits among dogs receiving targeted low-stress interventions than dogs receiving routine care.
One of the most useful lessons from veterinary practice is that not all “anxiety” starts with an emotional problem.
Pain is stressful.
So are itching, gastrointestinal discomfort, urinary urgency, breathing difficulties, cognitive decline, and hormonal disease.
I have seen dogs presented because they had suddenly become restless, clingy, irritable, or unable to sleep, only for examination to uncover an underlying medical problem. From the owner's perspective the change looked behavioral, but the dog was responding perfectly logically to feeling physically uncomfortable.
If your dog's behavior has changed suddenly, especially in a previously relaxed adult dog, a veterinary examination should usually come before assuming that the problem is purely psychological.
Book an appointment if stress or anxiety is occurring frequently, interfering with sleep or normal activities, causing your dog significant distress, or becoming progressively worse.
You should also seek veterinary advice if behavioral changes occur alongside weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, increased urination, persistent itching, coughing, recurrent infections, pain, lethargy, or other physical symptoms.
Your veterinarian may recommend medical investigations before developing a behavioral treatment plan.
For significant fear and anxiety disorders, treatment may include environmental changes, behavior modification, management strategies, and, where appropriate, medication.
Medication is not a failure of training. In a severely anxious dog, reducing the intensity of the fear response can make learning possible in the first place.
Persistent anxiety can alter stress-hormone signaling and the activity of immune cells, so chronic anxiety may affect how efficiently the immune system functions. It does not mean an anxious dog has no immunity or will inevitably become ill.
Cortisol influences inflammation and numerous immune-cell functions, and prolonged exposure can suppress or alter aspects of immune activity. Normal cortisol is essential for health, however, so cortisol itself is not inherently harmful.
Stress does not directly create bacterial or viral infections because an infectious organism still has to be present. However, prolonged stress may alter immune defenses and could contribute to susceptibility in combination with other risk factors.
Prolonged stress can interfere with biological processes involved in inflammation and tissue repair, so it may potentially affect healing. Pain, infection, nutrition, medication, age, and the type of injury are usually important factors too.
Yes. Stress hormones can cause characteristic changes in circulating white blood cells, sometimes called a stress leukogram, including increased neutrophils and reduced lymphocytes in certain circumstances. Blood-test changes need to be interpreted alongside the dog's symptoms and other laboratory results.
A brief stressful experience is unlikely to produce lasting immune damage in an otherwise healthy dog. The greater concern is severe, repeated, or prolonged stress without adequate opportunities for recovery.
Rather than trying to “boost” immunity with supplements, focus on restoring the basics: appropriate nutrition, sleep, exercise, preventive healthcare, parasite control, and reducing the underlying source of stress. If your dog has significant or persistent anxiety, discuss it with your veterinarian rather than relying solely on calming products.
So, can stress lower a dog's immune system? Yes, but the relationship is more sophisticated than simply saying that stress makes immunity weaker.
The short-term stress response is a normal survival mechanism and can actually stimulate certain immune activities. Problems are more likely when stress becomes prolonged, severe, or repeatedly activated without enough opportunity for the body to recover.
Recent canine research supports something veterinarians have long recognized clinically: emotional wellbeing and physical health are closely connected. Chronic stress can influence cortisol signaling, immune-cell behavior, inflammation, gastrointestinal function, sleep, and many other physiological processes.
That does not mean every anxious dog will become physically ill, and it certainly does not mean every recurring health problem is caused by stress. But ongoing anxiety deserves attention even when the dog appears physically healthy.
Helping a stressed dog feel safer is not simply about stopping unwanted behaviors. It is part of looking after the whole animal, immune system included.
