Most of us recognize that stress can make a dog miserable in the moment. A thunderstorm sends them under the bed. Being left alone triggers pacing and panting. A change of home leaves them unsettled for a few days.

But what if stress does not last for a few minutes or days? What happens when a dog's body repeatedly feels that it needs to stay on high alert for weeks, months, or even years?

Chronic stress may contribute to poorer health and potentially reduce a dog's healthy lifespan, although we do not yet have evidence showing that stress directly takes a predictable number of years off a dog's life. The more immediate concern is that prolonged stress can affect several biological systems at once, including immune function, metabolism, digestion, sleep, and behavior.

Imagine a dog suddenly hearing something crash behind them. Within moments, their nervous system prepares them to react. Heart rate may rise, energy becomes rapidly available, attention sharpens, and stress hormones are released.

One of the central systems involved is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis. It ultimately stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.

Cortisol often gets portrayed as a villain, but that is unfair. Dogs need cortisol. It helps regulate blood sugar, metabolism, immune responses, blood pressure, and the body's response to danger.

The problem develops when the body's emergency system struggles to switch off.

A 2025 study investigated telomere length in domestic dogs alongside factors including health, lifestyle, social environment, exercise, and cumulative life experiences. The researchers found associations between aspects of dogs' life histories and cellular aging, adding to growing interest in telomeres as potential markers of animal welfare and biological aging.

This does not prove that an anxious dog will die younger.

Telomeres are influenced by multiple genetic, environmental, and biological factors. The research is valuable because it gives scientists a potential window into the cumulative effects of life experiences rather than providing a countdown clock for individual dogs.
