For owners who enjoy close companionship, can manage a giant dog physically and financially, and are prepared for a relatively short average life span, the Newfoundland offers something remarkable: immense strength wrapped around an unusually gentle temperament.
Most Newfoundlands have strong swimming instincts, webbed feet, a water-resistant coat, and a powerful swimming stroke. Nevertheless, puppies should be introduced to water gradually, and even capable adult dogs need supervision around currents, pools, ice, and deep water.
